Chikano Haruka (Sakuraba Nanami) is a girl typical of what is called the “generation with breathing space”. Because there is an employment slump right then, she suffers spectacular failure. The job Haruka finally gets is at a subcontractor for publishing companies’ editorial production. Furthermore, she is a contract employee. Her workplace is the worst. The full-time employees are unmotivated, Saegusa (Yasuda Ken) always says disagreeable things, and the illustrator Tadokoro Yusaku (Masuno Hidetomo) comes and goes with a sullen appearance … … It is dull work of endless odd jobs and Haruka has no dreams or aspirations for the future. Complaining privately becomes her only pastime. She has a lonely birthday where no one even contacts her. Then, when she gets into the company car in a solitary celebration, a voice suddenly says “Happy birthday Haruka-san!” The car has started talking! The owner of the voice says that it has come from the future. Haruka initially finds it incredible and keeps quarrelling with with the vocal car, but she is reunited with the senior, Tojo Keisuke (Yanagishita Tomo), whom she had adored back in her high school days and changes occur to her everyday life. However, that is all the work of the car … … Haruka makes the acquaintance of Hasegawa (Atsushi), who works for a big publishing company. Hasegawa is interested in her and invites her to come to his company. Haruka is dissatisfied with her current company, and feels herself wavering. One day, she loses her temper at her detested superior. Defiantly declaring that she is quitting, Haruka storms out. In the end she learns that reality is harsh … … At that moment, Tadokoro calls out to her. It is also the work of the car who has somehow got through to her. Haruka, who has slowly become proactive because of the car’s “meddling”, is gradually able to confer with the car as if it were her only good friend.
